Does Your Face Turn Red When You Drink? Here's Why!
Does Your Face Turn Red When You Drink? This can be embarrassing especially during social occasions, don't despair it's quite a common condition. The following article will explain a little more about this condition.
Medical Term (AFR) - Alcohol Flush Reaction
The condition is called alcohol flush reaction or AFR, it's pretty easy to tell when you've got it since your face turns bright red after drinking.
Other than facial flushing symptoms, AFR may include flushing of the neck and other parts of the body. Symptoms may include a heightened heart rate, headaches, and nausea. This can be after as little as one drink.
Asian Glow - Another Term for a Blushing Red Face
AFR is also known as the Asian glow or the Asian flush although Asians are not the only ones who suffer from it. Over 500 million people worldwide experience flush reactions with between 36 to 50% of them being of East Asian descent.
How Alcohol Effects The Body
Alcohol is typically metabolized in the liver where it's first oxidized into acetaldehyde people with AFR carry a genetic mutation that disables this process. They have an inherited deficiency in the enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase or aldh2.
According to a medical study, approximately 8 percent of the world population is aldh2 deficient. Aldh2 is the enzyme that converts acetaldehyde, without it we're left with an accumulation of acetaldehyde up to 10 times the normal concentration.
Researchers at Brown University say, acetaldehyde is like -formaldehyde- which is embalming fluid. It destroys proteins and it destroys DNA, pretty nasty stuff so imagine not being able to break that down.
Is There a Cure for Those Who Get Red Face or ARF?
Unfortunately, there is no cure for AFR since it's a genetic issue, the only way to prevent a flush reaction is to avoid alcohol completely. So if you still want to drink but suffer from AFR here are some tips to cope with it.
Tips For Coping with Alcohol Flush Reaction
- Drink moderately, that's two drinks for men and one drink for women per day.
- Eat before and/or while you're drinking.
- Fatty foods and carbs can slow down the rate of alcohol absorption.
- Drink plenty of water or non-alcoholic drinks if you've got the red flush reaction,
Don't wear red while drinking you'll end up looking like a giant tomato. Seriously you either got to cut down or have a bit of a bite while drinking but don't worry too much it happens to the best of us.
